As usual, Carter was awake before me, but this time, he hadn’t left the bed to get dressed or cook breakfast. The room was a lot lighter than it usually was when I woke up, so it was probably later than normal.

Sometime during the night, I’d wrapped my body around Carter’s, and was still clinging onto him like he was going to leave again.

Suddenly feeling awkward, I tried pulling away, but his warm hands on my back held me in place. “Don’t,” Carter told me, his voice rough with sleep. “I like the way your body feels against mine. I’ve missed you.” And then Carter scratched at his beard. “Unless you don’t like to cuddle?”

“I like this,” I said, relaxing back into him.

His chest had a smattering of hair covering it, and it tickled my cheek, but it wasn’t unpleasant. Neither was being held for this long. Carter’s body was softer than the twins, and it was comfortable to lie against.

“I wish I could stay like this all day,” Carter muttered.

“Why can’t we?” I reached my arm further around his body and used it to pull myself into his lap, my knees, on either side of his body. As I slid my hands up Carter’s chest, settling on his shoulders, I leaned down and tilted my head before pressing my lips against his.

Carter let out a soft groan as I moved my lips against his, savoring his taste. His hand didn’t stray from the small of my back, but as I caught his lower lip between mine, I felt it clenching at the thin silken fabric of my nightdress.

The move pulled the fabric tight, and the sensation of it brushing over my nipples had me squirming in his lap. Beneath me, I could feel him start to harden and press up against me in a way that had me gasping against his lips.

My hands went up into his hair, and then they brushed over something hard.

As Carter let out a harsh growl, his hands around my waist tightened, but instead of pressing me harder against him, he picked me up and set me down beside him.

I stared up at him, breathing heavily, as I stared at his graying skin and the two protruding horns on each side of his head. He was breathing as heavily as I was. “Unfortunately, being away means I’ve got work to do.”

“Now?” I asked in disbelief. “You just said you wanted to spend all day here.”

Carter shook his head. “With spring around the corner, it’s imperative I get this work done.”

“What work do you need to do? Can I help?”

“No,” Carter said, so firmly, it made me lift my head to look at him. “This is work that only I can do.”

“Because you don’t think I can?”

“Zera—”

“Don’t use that tone on me like that. I know I’m not clever, and I know there’s a lot I don’t know, but it doesn’t mean I can’t help. It doesn’t mean I’m not capable of learning things.”

Carter scooted backwards so he was half sitting, bringing me with him.
